Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘱𑘜𑘹 (bhiṇe), from Sanskrit भी (bhī, to fear, root), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyh₂- (to fear). Indo-Aryan cognates include Konkani भिव्चे (bhivce); cognates outside Indo-Aryan include Russian боя́ться (bojátʹsja, to fear).
