Etymology
[edit]Unknown. Perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰramH-, though the only Indo-Iranian cognate may be Younger Avestan 𐬠𐬭𐬁𐬯𐬀𐬝 (brāsat̰, “to wander, roam?”), a hapax whose interpretation is uncertain.[1] The term could derive from a Proto-Indo-European root of the shape *bʰremH-.[2] However, there are no clear cognates outside of Indo-Iranian.[1]
