[edit]Etymology
[edit]Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit मच्छर (macchara, “*mosquito”) without cluster simplification—compare the variant माछर (māchar). Of uncertain further etymology, as Later Sanskrit मत्सर (matsara, “mosquito”) is only attested lexicographically. Possibly same as Prakrit मच्छर (macchara, “exhilarating”), from Vedic Sanskrit मत्सर (matsara). Or related to Prakrit मच्छी (macchī, “fly”) and Sanskrit मक्षा (mákṣā, “fly”), whence Hindi मक्खी (makkhī, “fly”). Compare Gujarati મચ્છર (macchar).
