From Proto-Indo-Aryan *muẓḍʰás (cognate with Prakrit 𑀫𑀼𑀟𑁆𑀠 (muḍḍha)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *muždʰás, from the root *mawǰʰ- (to err, to deviate). The Sanskrit root is मुह् (muh).
