Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *méldʰ-e-ti (“to abandon”);[1] or from *mel-dʰeh₁- an extension of *(s)mel- (“false, bad”);[2] or from an extension of *melh₂- (“to grind, crush”) (see there).
