From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyawdʰ- (“to fight, to battle”), from Proto-Indo-European *Hyewdʰ- (“to move, to be agitated”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬏𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (yūiδiieiti, “to fight”), Parthian yws- (“to battle”), Latin iubeō, Lithuanian judėti.
