From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáṣṭi, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wášti, from Proto-Indo-European *wéḱ-ti, from *weḱ- (to wish, want). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬍‎ (vaštī‎), Old Persian 𐎺𐏁𐎴 (vašna, will, favor).
