Etymology
[edit]Feminine of वेश्य (veśya, “fit to be entered”), which see for more. The Sanskrit root is विश् (viś, “to enter”). Literally meaning "she who is fit to be entered"; with "enter" here referring to the act of sexual penetration.

ratitaḥ pravartanaṃ svābhāvikaṃ kṛtrimaṃ arthārtham. - By having intercourse with men, courtesans obtain sexual pleasure, as well as their own maintenance. Now when she engages with a man out of attraction, her action is natural; but when she resorts to him for the purpose of getting money, her action is artificial and feigned and not driven by arousal.
