From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáćatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáčatay, from Proto-Indo-European *sékʷetor, from *sekʷ- (“to follow”). Cognate with Latin sequor, Ancient Greek ἕπομαι (hépomai), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬗𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬉 (hacaitē).
