Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi ससणा (sasaṇā), ससाणा (sasāṇā), Maharastri Prakrit *𑀲𑀲𑀸𑀅𑀡 (*sasāaṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit शशादन (śaśādana, brown hawk).
