Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *serp- (to creep, crawl). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕρπω (hérpō, creep, crawl) whence ἕρπης (hérpēs), Proto-Albanian *serpena, Latin serpō whence serpēns (serpent).
