[edit]Inherited from Middle Bengali *কবি (*kobi), borrowed from Portuguese couve (“cabbage”), from Latin caulis (“stalk, stem”). Cognate with Assamese কবি (kobi), Hindi गोभी (gobhī), Punjabi ਗੋਭੀ (gobhī), Marathi कोबी (kobī), Manipuri ꯀꯣꯕꯤ (kobee).
