Bengali[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀔𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀟 (khaggaḍa), from 𑀔𑀕𑁆𑀕 (khagga, reed, sugarcane; rhinoceros horn) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-), from Sanskrit खाड्ग (khāḍga, (anything) related to rhinoceros), vriddhi of खड्ग (khaḍga, rhinoceros), from a non-Aryan substrate; regarding the semantic connection, rhinoceroses naturally live around and eat from reeds. Cognate with Odia ଖଗଡ଼ା (khôgôṛa). Doublet of খাগ (khag, writing reed; rhinoceros horn; boar tusk) and খড়গ (khoṛog).
