Etymology[edit]

A compound of পঞ্চ (ponco, five) + গড় (goṛ, fort, stronghold), named such due to the presence of five forts in this region, namely: Bhitargarh (ভিতরগড়), Mirgarh (মীরগড়), Rajangarh (রাজনগড়), Hossaingarh (হোসেনগড়), and Debangarh (দেবনগড়).[1]
