From Proto-Indo-Iranian *pánča, from Proto-Indo-European *pénkʷe. Compare Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬧𐬗𐬀 (paṇca), Old Church Slavonic пѧть (pętĭ), Lithuanian penki, Albanian pesë, Ancient Greek πέντε (pénte), Latin quinque and Old English fīf (English five).
