Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from Sanskrit गढ (gaḍha, fence, ditch, moat; anything designed to impede entry).

गढ़ (gaṛhm (Urdu spelling گڑھ)

  1. fort
    गढ़ के चारों ओर गहरी खाई थी।
    There was a deep ditch around the fort.
  2. (fig.) stronghold
    यह मुहल्ला गुंडों का गढ़ है।
    This locality is a stronghold of the hoodlums.
    कलकत्ता और बंबई पूंजीपतियों के गढ़ हैं।
    Calcuta and Bombay are strongholds of the capitalists.

Usage notes[edit]

The first meaning of गढ़ (gaṛh, fort) is now less common, but is preserved in the names of some cities (रायगढ़ (rāyagaṛh), शंकरगढ़ (śaṅkargaṛh), पिथौरागढ़ (pithaurāgaṛh), etc.)
