Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀺𑀆 (vijjuliā), from Sanskrit विद्युल्लता (vidyullatā, “forked lightning”), composed of विद्युत् (vidyut, “lightning”) + लता (latā, “creeper, vine, liana”), with the shape of the lightning being compared to a creeper.[1] Cognate with Hindi बिजली (bijlī). Partial doublets are বিদ্যুৎ (biddut) and লতা (lota).
