Inherited from Middle Bengali ভড় (bhoṛ), from Sanskrit भृति (bhṛti, “support”) or भृतिका (bhṛtikā), from the root भृ (bhṛ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰar-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. Cognate with Assamese ভৰি (bhori).
