Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀇 (*makkhaï), from Sanskrit म्रक्षति (mrakṣati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hmráḱṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hmráḱšati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃mréǵ-s-eti, desiderative of *h₃merǵ- (to wipe). Doublet of মাখন (makhon), মাজা (maja), মিষ্টি (miśṭi), মিঠা (miṭha), and মিটা (miṭa).
