From Sanskrit মৎস্য (mátsya), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mátsyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Cognate with Sylheti ꠝꠣꠍ (masó), Bengali মাছ (mach), Odia ମାଛ (mācha), Hindi मच्छ (macch), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (maccha), Sindhi مَڇُ / मछु (machu), Marathi मासा (māsā).
