Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘭𑘰 (māsā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀫𑀙 (macha /⁠maccha⁠/) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (mátsya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Doublet of मत्स्य (matsya). Cognate with Hindi मच्छ (macch), Sindhi مَڇُ / मछु (machu), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (maccha), Nepali माछा (māchā), Odia ମାଛ (machô), Bengali মাছ (mach), Assamese মাছ (mas).
