From Old Marathi मासा (māsā), मछ (macha), मच्छ (maccha), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (matsya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Doublet of मत्स्य (matsya). Cognate with Hindi मच्छ (macch), Sindhi مَڇُ / मछु (machu), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (maccha), Nepali माछा (māchā), Oriya ମାଛ (machô), Bengali মাছ (mach), Assamese মাছ (mas).
