Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráźʰati, but of uncertain ultimate origin. See Sanskrit रहस् (rahas) for details. Cognate with Assamese ৰোৱা (rüa), Hindustani Hindi रहना (rahnā) / Urdu رہنا (rahnā).
