    Inherited from Old Hindi रहना (rahanā). Cognate with Punjabi ਰਹਿਣਾ (rahiṇā), Nepali रहनु (rahanu), Bengali রহা (roha), রওয়া (roōẇa), Gujarati રહેવું (rahevũ), Marathi राहणे (rāhṇe), Assamese ৰোৱা (rüa).

    Sense 4, the continuous aspect auxiliary, is a possible semantic loan from Persian ایستادن (istâdan), which served as the continuous aspect auxiliary in the Transoxiana dialect of Persian, a sense which is still preserved in modern Tajik истодан (istodan).
