Hindi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Hindi अपना (apanā), आपन (āpana), आपना (āpanā), from Prakrit अप्पणय (appaṇaya, “own”), from Sanskrit *आत्मनक (ātmanaka). The Prakrit form is based on अप्पण (appaṇa, “self”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) and replaces Sanskrit आत्मक (ātmaka, “belong to”), for which compare Hindi -आत्मक (-ātmak). Cognate with Gujarati આપણું (āpaṇũ), Punjabi ਆਪਣਾ (āpaṇā), Nepali आफ्नो (āphno), and Bengali আপন (apon). Related to आप (āp, “you, self”).
