ਰਹਿਣਾ

Punjabi

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑀳𑀇 (rahaï), from Sanskrit *रहति (*rahati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráźʰati (to remain, stay). Related to the attested Sanskrit रहस् (rahas, isolation).[1] Compare Hindi रहना (rahnā).

The sense of the continuous aspect auxiliary is, perhaps via Hindi रहना (rahnā), a possible semantic loan from Persian ایستادن (istâdan), which served as the continuous aspect auxiliary in the Transoxiana dialect of Persian, a sense which is still preserved in modern Tajik истодан (istodan).
