Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian آواز (āwāz), from Middle Persian ʾwʾz (āwāz), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs. Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx. Doublet of वाक् (vāk). Compare Assamese আৱাজ (awaz), Bengali আওয়াজ (aōẇaj), Gujarati અવાજ (avāj), Marathi आवाज़ (āvāj̈), Punjabi ਅਵਾਜ਼ (avāz).
