Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit हंस (haṃsa), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰansás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰansás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns. Cognate with Assamese হাঁহ (hãh). Doublet of হংস (hoṅśo).
