Borrowed from Middle Persian [script needed] (jašan), from Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬯𐬥𐬀 (yasna), from Proto-Iranian *Hyajnáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyaȷ́nás (compare Sanskrit यज्ञ (yajñá), from Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ-nós, from *Hyeh₂ǵ- (“to worship, sacrifice”) (compare Ancient Greek ἁγνός (hagnós)).
