Borrowed from Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā, “tongue”), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Cognates include Old Latin dingua and Latin lingua, Gothic 𐍄𐌿𐌲𐌲𐍉 (tuggō) and Old Church Slavonic ѩзꙑкъ (językŭ).
