Borrowing from Sanskrit जिह्वा(jihvā, tongue), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Cognates include Old Latin dingua and Latin lingua, Gothic 𐍄𐌿𐌲𐌲𐍉(tuggō) and Old Church Slavonic ѩзꙑкъ(językŭ).
