[edit]Borrowed from Hindi चाय (cāy, “tea”), in turn from Classical Persian چَای (čāy, “tea”), from Chinese 茶 (chá). Doublet of തേ (tē).

[edit]- The term ചായ (cāya) is the most common word used in Malayalam for the beverage. തേ (tē) is largely obsolete except in the compound word തേയില (tēyila).
