Etymology[edit]

From Pali jayanto (literally conquered; triumphed; won), the first word of the Buddhist chant Mahājayamangala-gathā ("Verses of Great Victory and Auspices"), which says:

Pali: Jayanto bodhiyā mūle sakyānaṃ nandi vaddhano.
"Victorious at the foot of the Bodhi tree was he who enhanced the delight of the Sakyans."
