From Proto-Tai *C̬.tuəmᴮ (to flood). Cognate with Lao ຖ້ວມ (thūam), ᦏᦳᧄᧉ (ṫhum²), Shan ထူမ်ႈ (thūum), Zhuang dumh, Saek ทุม.
