From Old Khmer parohita (chaplain), from Pali purohita (idem), ultimately from Sanskrit पुरोहित (purohita, family priest). Cognate with Modern Khmer បរោហិត (bɑɑroohət), Lao ປະໂລຫິດ (pa lō hit).
