Learned borrowing from Sanskrit फणिश्वर (phaṇiśvara, literally lord of snakes), from फणि (phaṇi, snake) + ईश्वर (īśvara, lord; chief; ruler), equivalent to Thai ผณิ (pà-ní) +‎ อีศวร.
