From Proto-Tai *C̥.waːlᴬ (sweet; delicious). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຫວານ (huān), ᦛᦱᧃ (v̇aan), Shan ဝၢၼ် (wǎan), Tai Nüa ᥝᥣᥢᥴ (wáan), Tai Dam ꪪꪱꪙ, Phake ဝ︀ꩫ︀် (wan), Ahom 𑜈𑜃𑜫 (ban), Zhuang van, Saek หว่าน. Compare Sui faanl (sweet), Southern Kam kuanp (sweet).
