From Old Chinese (OC *ɡrɯːm, “salty”) or (OC *ɡ·lam, *ɡ·lams, “salt, salty”). Cognate with Lao ເຄັມ (khem), Shan ၸဵမ်း (tsáem), Saek แค๊ม.
