From Sanskrit देशना (deśanā, instruction; direction); perhaps via Old Khmer desnā or Angkorian Old Khmer desanā (sermon, discourse, lecture; to give a sermon, discourse, or lecture). Cognate with Modern Khmer ទេសនា (teisaʼnaa), ទេស្នា (teisaʼnaa).
