From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɯəᴬ (tiger). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩮᩬᩥᩋ, Lao ເສືອ (sư̄a), Khün ᩈᩮᩬᩧ, ᦵᦉᦲ (ṡoe), Tai Dam ꪹꪎ, Shan သိူဝ် (sǒe), Tai Nüa ᥔᥫᥴ (sóe), Aiton ꩬိုဝ် (süw), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (süw) or 𑜏𑜢𑜤𑜰𑜫 (sü0). Compare Proto-Be *ʑuaᴬ¹.
