From Proto-Tai *ʰnɯəjᴮ (tired; exhausted). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶᩮᩬᩥ᩠᩵ᨿ (to have a slight fever), Lao ເໜື່ອຍ (nư̄ai), Tai Dam ꪹꪘ꪿ꪥ, Tai Dón ꪘꪷꪥꫀ, Phake ꩫုၺ် (nuñ), Ahom 𑜃𑜤𑜐𑜫 (nuñ), Nong Zhuang noiq, Zuojiang Zhuang nwaj.
