From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kɛːwᴬ² (“Vietnamese”), from Proto-Tai *keːwᴬ (“Vietnamese”),[1] from Middle Chinese 交 (MC kaew)[2] of 交趾 (MC kaew tsyiX, “name of the ancient Chinese commandery in northern Vietnam”).

Cognate with Thai แกว (gɛɛo), Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩠ᩅ, Khün ᨠᩯ᩠ᩅ, Lao ແກວ (kǣu), Lü ᦶᦂᧁ (k̇aew), Tai Dam ꪵꪀꪫ, Zuojiang Zhuang geu.
