From Proto-Tai *manᴬ (“singular third-person pronoun (strong)”).^[1]

Cognate with Isan มัน, Lao ມັນ (man), Northern Thai ᨾᩢ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨾᩢ᩠ᨶ, Tai Dam ꪣꪽ, Shan မၼ်း (mán), Ahom 𑜉𑜃𑜫 (man), Zhuang minz (dialectal) and faenz ?, Zuojiang Zhuang minz and mwnz.
