From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmajᴬ (thread), from Proto-Tai *ʰmajᴬ (thread), from Old Chinese (OC *hmɯl, “fine; glorious”).[1] Cognate with Lao ໄໝ (mai), Tai Dam ꪼꪢ, ᦺᦖ (ṁay), Shan မႆ (mǎy).
