Etymology[edit]

From Chinese (gentleman); probably via Teochew Chinese. Cognate with Japanese kun 君.

There is a set of Thai honorific pronouns seem to have been borrowed from Chinese immigrants during the early Rattanakosin period: ฉัน (chan) from 咱 (zán) replaced native Thai word กู (ku) เธอ (thoe) from 他/她 (tā) replaced native Thai word มึง (meung) ท่าน (than) from 怹 (tān) replaced native Thai word มัน (man)
