[edit]From Proto-Tai *najꟲ (“this”).[1] Southwestern Tai such as Thai นี้ [niːꟲ²] and some Central Tai dialects show reflexes *iː.[2] This is probably because this etymon is a grammatical word.[2]
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ນີ້ (nī), Northern Thai ᨶᩦ᩶, Khün ᨶᩦ᩶, Lü ᦓᦲᦰ (ni) or ᦓᦲᧉ (nii²), Tai Dam ꪙꪲ꫁, Shan ၼႆႉ (nâ̰i).
In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang neix.
In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang naej (Longzhou dialect)[3] or naeq / naex (Daxin dialect)[3] or neij (Ningming dialect).[3]
