Usage notes

• Synonymous with, but less formal than and not always interchangeable with, นี้ (níi). For example, คนนี้ (kon-níi, “this person”) is never used as คนนี่ (kon-nîi), เพียงนี้ (piiang-níi, “to this extent”) is never used as เพียงนี่ (piiang-nîi), and ในการนี้ (nai-gaan-níi, “in this regard”) is never used as ในการนี่ (nai-gaan-nîi).
• Sometimes, especially in poetry or literature, used in combination with นี้ (níi) as นี่นี้ (nîi-níi), as in ธรณีนี่นี้เป็นพยาน (tɔɔ-rá-nii-nîi-níi-bpen-pá-yaan, “this Earth shall be [my] witness”).
• The slang pronoun is not replaceable by นี้ (níi).
