From Proto-Tai *ɣwaːjᴬ (water buffalo). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨤ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨿ, Isan ควย, Lao ຄວາຍ (khuāi), ᦩᦻ (xwaay), Tai Dam ꪁꪫꪱꪥ (kwaay4), Tai Dón ꪅꪫꪱꪥ (xwaay4), Tai Daeng ꪃꪫꪱꪥ (khwaay4), Shan ၵႂၢႆး (kwáai), Tai Nüa ᥑᥣᥭᥰ (xäay), Ahom 𑜁𑜨𑜩 (khoy) or 𑜁𑜩 (khay), Zhuang vaiz, Saek ว๊าย.
