From Proto-Mon-Khmer *koŋ (to bend; to be bent). Cognate with Thai ก่ง (gòng), ก้งโค้ง, โกง (goong), โก่ง (gòong), โก้งโค้ง, Lao ໂຄ້ງ (khōng), Zhuang goengq, Zuojiang Zhuang koengq, Nong Zhuang gongq (arch). Compare to Chinese (gǒng).
