From Proto-Mon-Khmer *koŋ (to bend; to be bent) (whence Khmer កោង (kaong, to bend; to be bent)). Cognate with Thai ก่ง (gòng), ก้งโค้ง, โก่ง (gòong), โก้งโค้ง, โค้ง (kóong).
