From Proto-Tai *meːᴮ (mother). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩯ᩵, Lao ແມ່ (), ᦶᦙᧈ (mae1), Shan မႄႈ (māae), Ahom 𑜉𑜦𑜧 (mee), Bouyei meeh, Zhuang meh.
