From Proto-Tai *ʰrwɤːjᴬ (to disappear). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩣ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᩉᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ຫາຍ (hāi), ᦠᦻ (ḣaay), Shan ႁၢႆ (hǎai), Tai Nüa ᥞᥣᥭᥴ (háay), Phake ꩭႝ (hay), Ahom 𑜑𑜩 (hay) or 𑜍𑜩 (ray).
